Quick answer
Mercury wins in Ontario for practical reasons: dealer network density, parts availability, and resale demand. Yamaha and Honda make reliable motors. But when something breaks in July on Rice Lake, which brand gets you back on the water faster? In this region, that is usually Mercury. Full disclosure: we sell Mercury exclusively and have since 1965. Build a live CAD quote at mercuryrepower.ca.
Let us get the bias disclosure out of the way
Harris Boat Works has sold Mercury exclusively since 1965. We are not a neutral source. But our bias came after the market reality, not before it. Mercury was already the established outboard brand in Ontario, with the deepest service network and the strongest factory relationships with Canadian boat builders. We aligned our business to where our customers were.
What "established North American presence" means in practice
Mercury Marine is one of the leading outboard manufacturers in the world by volume. In Canada, that translates to more dealerships, more certified technicians, and deeper parts supply chains than any other outboard brand.
When your motor needs a water pump impeller on a Thursday in August, that means the part is on a shelf at a local dealer. When you sell the boat in five years, the buyer local dealer already knows the platform.
The four reasons Mercury makes sense for Ontario boaters
1. Dealer network density
Ontario has one of the strongest dealer networks for outboards. Parts on hand, technician depth, coverage when you travel, resale support. Finding a qualified Honda or Yamaha tech in Gores Landing or Bobcaygeon is harder than finding a Mercury tech.
2. Factory relationships with Canadian boat builders
Most aluminum fishing boats sold in Canada (Lund, Crestliner, Princecraft, Lowe) come Mercury-rigged from the factory. If you are repowering an existing boat that came factory-rigged for Mercury, keeping it Mercury avoids a $2,000 to $3,000 CAD brand-conversion cost.
3. Full lineup coverage for every Ontario use case
Mercury FourStroke covers 2.5 HP through 300 HP. Pro XS handles performance fishing. SeaPro covers commercial-duty. Verado covers premium high-horsepower applications (special-order at HBW).
4. Parts and service continuity over the motor life
A well-maintained Mercury lasts 15 to 25 years. Mercury depth in Ontario means we can service every motor we sell for the full life of that motor.

Where Mercury is not automatically the right answer
Coastal saltwater. Yamaha has strong saltwater dealer coverage. In Florida or Pacific Northwest, the dealer math may favor Yamaha.
Existing non-Mercury rigging. If your boat came factory-rigged for Yamaha or Honda, and the motor is running fine, stay with it. Brand switching costs money.
Small-portable segment. Honda has a strong reputation in sub-15 HP four-stroke portables. In our area, we recommend the Mercury 9.9 ProKicker because we can back it up.
Why HBW has stayed Mercury-only since 1965
Expertise depth, parts inventory investment, customer fit. Three generations of HBW technicians have trained on Mercury engines. Our parts shelf is Mercury. The boats coming in for service and repower on Rice Lake are mostly Mercury.
